Light Up Your Trading with a Computer
Designed for Trading

By Larry Jacobs, Editor, Traders World magazine

Forget about going to computer stores or Internet-based national companies to find a good trading computer. They will just disappoint you, and they are not going to give you the computer you need to successfully trade with. You will find they are not capable of producing a multi-monitor computer designed for trading. They don’t know what needs to be in a trading computer.

Try and ask them if they can build you a computer with four or more monitors and see what they say. If they attempt to build one for you, it will have constant problems, such as lockups, software and hardware conflicts with many shutdowns. The trading computer should be designed specifically for trading by someone who specializes in trading computers and who knows what he or she is doing. It should be constructed with the right, high-quality parts.

The motherboard is one of the most important components. It should be stable and compatible with most trading software. Many motherboards run into software conflicts with multi-monitor cards. That results in lockups.

It should have the Western Digital 74MB Raptor 10,000 drive, which is almost twice as fast as the standard 7,200 RPM drive used by most computers. It is much more reliable and lasts much longer than the normal drive. Very good for a trading computer. This drive is the fastest in the world and the trader’s friend.

The trader's computer should also use matched DDR 533 memory. That means every chip on one module is exactly the same as the other modules. Most major computer companies use cheap component memory that again causes computer lockups.

I like the state-of-the-art Logitech LX700 wireless keyboard and mouse. Its sleek, ultra-flat design and zero-degree tilt on the keyboard deliver a high level of ergonomic comfort. Its keys have the best feel and performance. The rechargeable 800 dpi optical mouse delivers exceptional comfort and control. It has the most advanced navigational features available in a keyboard-mouse combination -- perfect for trading.

In the category of multiple-port video cards, I like the Xentera GT4 PCI- Express card. It has the latest technology PCI-Express video card, capable of supporting DVI output that is much higher quality than the standard analog output of most computers today. It’s 100% faster than a PCI video card. It can easily power four monitors with a resolution of up to 1600 x 1200.

It should have the Windows XP Pro operating software and be optimized via both hardware and software. Because many of the features of XP Pro hog the power of the computer, many of these features should be disabled, so you have the full power of the computer to trade with.

The trader's computer should also be cooled with a Zalman 120mm CPU fan / copper heatsink and case fan. These are amazing. They cool a computer much more efficiently with half the noise of the standard cheap fans in computers. They are also very quiet and necessary for the serious trader to keep his concentration.

The trading computer should have PCAngel, which has virtually eliminated most technical support. This software can fix just about any software problem that you might encounter on the computer. PCAngel is at least 5 years ahead of any other recovery software.

You should also have onsite service for a trading computer. That means you get an 800 number to call for hardware support, and, if a hardware part needs replacing, a technician will come to your house and take care of it. There is no need to send your computer in and wait for two weeks to get it back. A trader just can’t afford to do that.
