| To measure volatility,
traders normally use the CBOE's Volatility Index ($VIX)
although other measures purport to do something similar.
Conventional interpretation of volatility is often
used to predict buy and sell signals for the general
market (for the S&P 500 index, for example). When
$VIX spikes up to a sharp peak while the market is
falling rapidly, a buy signal is at hand.
