Welcome to eSignal Advanced GET (EOD) - New User Orientation (modified 03/08/06)

Thank you for purchasing eSignal Advanced GET End of Day (EOD) with Dashboard. You've made a great choice. This New User Orientation information will help you get started using your Advanced GET software and introduce you to the various resources available to you as an eSignal Advanced GET Customer. You'll find the information on this page invaluable during your first few months of service, so you might want to add this link to your favorites and refer back here often. You can start from the top or use the quick links directory on the left side to jump to a particular section.

In your package, you should have received the following:

  • Advanced GET Software (CD)
  • Advanced GET Training Program (DVD or VHS)
  • Advanced GET EOD Manual
  • eSignal Learning Foundation Course Manual
  • Security Key (USB or Parallel)* (not included when upgrading from older versions of GET EOD)

* Important Note: The charge for a lost or stolen Security Key is $1500(USD). Please keep in a safe place. See this Article for additional information.

It's a good idea to start by viewing the DVD (or VHS tapes) and actually starting with Chapter 12. This chapter explains setting-up GET for the first time. After watching that section of the DVD, you can then more easily follow along with the instructions on this New User Orientation site. Keep that DVD handy as you'll likely want to watch it a few times to get reinforcement on how best to use the GET analytic tools.

As part of your Advanced GET purchase you may have received access to our eSignal Learning Mentoring service. If your account package included this service you should have received an e-mail with information on how to logon to the Mentoring session. We strongly recommend that you take advantage of this service. If your package did not include this service you can contact your sales associate for more details on how your can add this service to your account, or visit us on the web at WWW.AdvancedGET.com

On the eSignal Central website there are several other sources of valuable information to help you learn how to adapt your trading with the use of Advanced GET. We recommend that all new users view the Advanced GET Users' Audio & Video Training, which consists of six basic “How To” lessons. Each lesson takes about 50 minutes and viewing the recording is very simple and convenient. These Movie Clips are an excellent companion to the DVD and should provide you with close to 10 hours of training material. We also have many Knowledge Base (KB) articles on advanced get topic that you will also find useful. Advanced GET Knowledge Base,

Advanced GET requires the use of an end-of-day data source. Your initial purchase of Advanced GET, in most cases, includes a data source utility subscription (1st year) called eSignal Wizard. eSignal Wizard offers full coverage of US markets, including stocks, futures, options (quotes only), mutual funds, indices, and foreign exchange data. You will find additional information and references for eSignal Wizard throughout this orientation.

Note: Data must be correctly installed in one or more of the formats that are supported before Advanced GET can be used. See Preference Tab section below. Additional data formats that can be read by Advanced GET are Technical Tools, FutureSource, FutureLink, MetaStock, Computrac, AIQ, TC2000, Ensign, Megatech, and a variety of ASCII formats. Some of these support formats may no longer be available from third party data vendors. Please note that you are restricted to daily, weekly, and monthly charts on all of the data formats, excluding eSignal Wizard. With eSignal Wizard, you can also load end-of-day 60-minute charts.

Username/Password

Before you can start our data service, you have to give us your name and registration information and agree to the terms and conditions of our contract(s). As you begin to use our data service, please review your "eSignal Welcome" email for your username and password. If you have a valid username and password, you can move to the next section. If you have not received an email and do not have a username and password, please contact us @ (510) 264-1700 or email support@AdvancedGET.com.

eSignal Wizard

Your initial purchase of Advanced GET, in most cases, includes a data source utility subscription (1st year) called eSignal Wizard.

eSignal Wizard offers end-of-day data on all the U.S. Markets plus delayed Intraday access, so you can track today's market data. It gives you full coverage on stocks, futures, options (quotes only), mutual funds, indices, and foreign currency data. Through the use of eSignal Wizard, Advanced GET supports monthly, weekly, daily and 60-minute charts. You can update intraday or end-of-day and access our servers as often as you choose. If you miss a day, the system will automatically fill-in the days you missed.

Note: eSignal Wizard currently covers U.S. Markets only but we are planning to expand coverage to include European and Asia/Pacific markets in the future. We also recommend that clients download their eSignal Wizard data at least every two weeks in order to capture any new Stock Split adjustments that may have been added to the Daily data base.

Installing the Software

Note: Before installation, it is recommended that you exit or pause any Antivirus software, as it tends to significantly slow the installation of the eSignal Wizard data program. The eSignal Wizard installation will take some time to complete, as it is installing all the historical data for over 9000 issues. After starting installation, it is very important that you do not place the USB lock on your computer until prompted to do so in the on-screen instructions.

Installing the software is an easy process. If you experience any difficulties, click on the Guide to see more detailed instructions for installing the software and downloading the historical data.

  1. Insert the CD and select the Install button to start the eSignal Wizard. If the install menu does not appear, go to the Start menu for Windows, select RUN, and type D:\Demo.exe. (Assuming that your CD-ROM drive is labeled “D” on your computer).
  2. Once you’ve read the Installation Steps, click Next to continue.
  3. You are required to register your software online. Click the Next button to open a web browser and complete the “Click and Agree”. Once you’ve completed this step, close your browser to continue the installation. Note: If you have already done this step you can click the Skip button to continue the installation.
  4. Select the type of security lock sent with your package order. This will start the installation for the security lock driver and the AdvancedGET program. Note: It is very important that you do not place the USB lock on your computer until prompted to do so in the on-screen instructions.
  5. After the installation of the Advanced GET program, you still need to start the installation of the eSignal Wizard to access the historical data. Click Next to continue with the installation of the eSignal Wizard Data Base.
  6. After this step, you should restart your computer to complete the installation and begin using the AdvancedGET EOD program along with the eSignal Wizard data service.

First Look

The first time you launch Advanced GET you will see the basic program interface without any charts. GET uses different windows for each Chart, Dashboard, Quote Page, Search, etc. To be able to take full advantage of the ability to look at more than one issue at a time, or to look at the same issue on different time frames simultaneously, you should use the standard Windows features for window operation, such as Cascade, Tile Horizontally, Tile Vertically, Arrange Icons, Close All, and Bring Forward/Send Back. For a detailed description of these basic Windows operations see the Advanced GET Manual (Chapter 1 - Introduction).

To open a Chart, Dashboard, Quote Page or Search window, select the toolbar icon for the specific window or action.

Pages

Pages are a simple way of saving a single chart, multiple charts or Quote windows. GET uses many different windows for each Page, which allows you to take full advantage of the ability to look at more than one issue at a time. For example, if you load a chart and create multiple indicators on it, you can save the chart as a page and you can recall the page with all the indicators, when you restart the program.

There are several different window types in Advanced GET EOD.
Chart Window– the graphic display of the issue’s performance over a period of time.
Quote Board Window – an easy way to view symbols in a spreadsheet display.
Search Window - allows you to instruct the GET program to examine several different issues for a specific set of criteria on any given time frame as a portfolio.
Dashboard Window – allows you to instruct the GET program to monitor a trading strategy like the GET Stochastic trade strategy on multiple time frames of 60 min, Daily, Weekly or Monthly time periods in a condensed format. This eliminates the need to have multiple charts windows open for each symbol and each time period.

Toolbars

Toolbars
The Advanced GET Toolbars give you quick access to many of the program’s key features. For a complete description of the toolbars and the menu options in Advanced GET, Please refer to your Advanced GET User Manual. For information on the Advanced GET toolbars, while in the GET program, press F1 and type in "toolbars" to view a list of toolbar related topics. .

Chart Tool Bar

Chart Tool Bar – When a bar chart is first created, a collection of buttons called the Chart Tool Box appears on the left-hand side of the chart. These buttons are used to gain quick access to studies, indicators and alter the display of data on the chart. For a complete description of each function see the Advanced GET User’s Guide (Chapter 2-Introduction).

Drawing Tools

Drawing Tools – The Drawing Tool Bar is a set of buttons conveniently grouped together for easy access to the tools used to draw lines, boxes, squares, text, and a variety of proprietary studies on the chart. For a complete description of each function see the Advanced GET User's Guide (Chapter 2-Introduction).

Reference Guide to Advanced GET Studies

For a brief explanation of each of the Advanced GET indicators and recommended usage, please review the Referenced Guide to Advanced GET Studies.

eSignal Wizard Setup
The Setup button gives you access to the configurable items of eSignal Wizard.

User Tab

The first tab under Setup is User. This tab specifies what User Name and Password will be given to the data server at eSignal. The User Name, and Password should have been included with your original eSignal Wizard paperwork. After you have installed the eSignal Data Manager, the user name and password that you used during the install, will be automatically entered.

Data Directory Tab

The second tab under Setup is Data Directory. This is where you set the directory or path that eSignal Wizard should use to store downloaded files prior to merging. This directory should be the same directory where the eSignal Wizard program is installed. The default directory name is eSignal Wizard. Unless you have a custom install, you do not need to change this.

Connection Tab

The third tab under Setup is Connection. This tab specifies what Address should be used to make the connection to the data servers, and what port number to use. You should not change any of this information unless directed by a Support Technician. If, for some reason, you accidentally change this information you can press the Defaults button and the Address and Port will be set back to their default values. The "Use Alt Servers" should also remain checked unless you are behind a firewall or proxy. If you are having connection problems because you are behind a secure network, contact a Technical Support representative for further information.

Futures Tab

The next tab under Setup is the Futures tab. This tab will always keep your last successful download date for the Futures data. If you do not want Futures data, simply turn off the "Download Futures" check box. "Download data pack" should only be checked if you have reinstalled on a new computer or somehow lost your historical futures data. This will request a full historical download on all currently traded futures and Indexes carried by eSignal.

The Configure button brings up the Convert configuration screen. This is where you select the format(s) to use for converting your eSignal Wizard data, as well as the settings for each format.

The Technical Tools section is where you set the path that data in the Technical Tools format should be saved to when converted. If you do not want to convert to Technical Tools data, leave the "Convert to Technical Tools Format" box unchecked.

The ASCII section is where you set the path that data in the ASCII format should be saved to when converted. If you do not want to convert to ASCII data, leave the "Convert to ASCII Format" box unchecked. Since there are so many ways to create ASCII files, the convert program gives you a variety of options for the ASCII file format.

If there is a check next to Header inside the "ASCII Options" box, this indicates that a header (a description of the fields contained in the ASCII file) will be placed as the first line of the ASCII data file. Some programs require a header to be in the ASCII file to read it correctly. Please refer to the manual of the program that you wish to use this ASCII data with for more information on whether or not your program needs a header in the ASCII file. Please note that any problems encountered in reading ASCII data should be referred to the vendor of the program that you are using to access this data.

The Date Format indicates how the date should be displayed in the ASCII file. Please note that DD stands for 2 digit Date, MM stands for 2 digit month, and YY stands for the 2 digit year. If you require a 4-digit year, place a check next to "4 Digit Years" next to the Date dialog box. The Extension selection indicates the extension that the ASCII file will have. If you wish to change the extension, type the extension that you would like your ASCII file to have in the provided space. The most common extension is .PRN. Other common extensions are: .AHD, .TXT, .ASC. Please refer to the manual of the program that you wish to use this ASCII data with for more information on what type of extension you need for your ASCII files. Delimiter indicates how the different fields that are inside the ASCII file will be separated. Space indicates that just a single space will be placed between the fields. Comma means a comma will separate the fields, and Tab indicates a Tab will separate each field.

In the "Contract Types" box, a check next to Indices means that the Indices will be converted. A check next to Futures indicates that Futures will be converted. A check next to Stocks indicates that Stocks will be converted. The default is for all issues to be converted. If you do not want a particular data type to be converted, uncheck the appropriate check box.

NOTE:Upon completion of conversion preferences, you must perform a one-time conversion of the current eSignal Wizard database.

To convert the data:

Go to the eSignal Wizard Preferences dialog box > select Configure >Set parameters for your specific data (see above directions) , and click OK to exit and save these settings. Click OK in Preferences tab.

The Main eSignal Wizard screen returns and now click on “Convert” to complete the conversion.

Daily Historical Data Update Procedure

Your historical data resides on your local hard drive. This data should be updated each day. If you do not update each day, eSignal Wizard will remember the last time you updated. The next time you update, eSignal Wizard will automatically request the correct amount of new data and merge it with your local data files.

You can update your data at any time 24 hours a day - 7 Days a week. The current day's historical data is prepared for download at 4:45pm Eastern Standard Time. Only after this time can you update the current day's data.

To launch the eSignal Wizard Download Utility, click on the File menu and left click on the Download Data menu option. After choosing either option, you will notice that all charts, searches, quote boards, and web windows will be removed from the screen. They are still open; they are temporarily removed from the screen during the Data Download. Once the update is complete, and you close the Data Downloader, they will return to the screen with the newly updated historical data.

Data Update Steps

  1. Choose Download Data from the FILE Menu.
  2. Click Update Now button after Data Downloader appears.
  3. After the file download process and the data merge, click Close.

At this time, all of your local historical data will be updated to the most current date.

Data Download Features

Online/Offline Mode

If you are connected to the Internet and have installed the eSignal Data Manager, your program will start automatically in online mode. In this mode, Advanced GET will pull the historical data from your hard drive and then update the current day's data from the eSignal Internet servers. Unless you signed up for a real time eSignal account, the data that comes from the eSignal Internet server will be delayed by 20 minutes. Note: This intraday update will only update eSignal Wizard data.

When you start Advanced GET with eSignal Wizard, you will notice that there are four lights in the bottom right corner of the application.

They will start out red in color (Disconnected), change to yellow (Connecting), and then finally turn to green (Connected). Depending on your connection speed, this can happen very quickly. If the yellow (Connecting) lights turn red (Disconnected), this means that Advanced GET could not connect to the eSignal data servers. At this point you should exit Advanced GET and the eSignal data manager, then restart the Advanced GET application.

If you are not connected to the Internet, or have not installed the eSignal Data Manager, then Advanced GET will start in offline mode. Advanced GET will only display data that is local to your hard drive. You still have all of the features of Advanced GET, but will not be able to update the current displayed chart with the current day's data.

If at any time you do not want to start Advanced GET in Online Mode, hold the Control Key [CTRL] on your keyboard down while double clicking on the Advanced GET Icon. If you never want to us Advanced GET in Online Mode, then you can add the /d command line parameter to your Advanced GET Icon on your desktop. To do this, right click on your Advanced GET icon on the desktop and choose Properties. Then under the Shortcut Tab, change the Target to read:

c:\get\get.exe /d

Click OK, and now Advanced GET will always load in Offline Mode each time you use this Icon.

When loading a new chart in online mode, you will notice that the date in the upper right corner of the chart window will change. It will first be the date of your local data's most current bar date, then it will change to today's date after receiving the intraday update. **Remember the current day's data before you perform a data download, will be delayed by 20 minutes. A daily download for the current data is only ready to update your local data after 4:45pm eastern standard time.

During the loading of a chart, you will see the words Receiving at the top of the chart window.

Once the chart has been updated, the Receiving message will disappear. Now your data is updated to the current daily bar twenty minutes delayed.

Advanced GET Scanner

If you are a subscriber to Advanced GET Scanner, you have the ability to launch and use the Scanner inside Advanced GET. This is a Real Time Scanner that will search the entire stock market in seconds. It uses the proprietary studies that are in Advanced GET to scan 15, 30, 60 minute(s), Daily, and weekly time frames.

Note: This is a pay service, if you do not already have an account, or want more information, contact your sales representative and they will be able to assist you.

To launch the Advanced GET Scanner: Click on File then Advanced GET Scanner. The program will launch a web browser and bring you to the Advanced GET Scanner logon page. Your eSignal Wizard username and password will not work unless you have signed up and paid for this service.

Optional Stocks Portfolio

This is a new feature where we automatically update a list of stocks that are Optionable. Every time you download your data each evening, an options file will automatically download to your computer. You can use this file to view only Optionable stocks in your issue list or use it to search Optionable stocks.

View Optionable stocks in Issue List:

Once your Issue Dialog box is displayed on the screen, left click on the down arrow next to the Display Issues From drop down box.

Once you see the drop down window, left click on the Optional Stocks selection and your issue list will only contain stocks that are optional.

You will need to do this procedure each time you load a new chart on the screen. The default issue list will always be the full list of stocks and futures that you are collecting.

It is also possible to search only Optionable stocks. To search for Optionable stocks, open a search window and set your portfolio to Optional stocks.

Symbol Formats

Wherever possible, we try to use standard exchange Symbology. We've separated the formats into each respective category so it's easier to follow:

North American Stocks: For US Stocks, use the commonly known symbol (IBM, GE, GM, etc.) If you are looking for a warrant, class stock, preferred, etc. For a complete listing of all formats, please check our Symbols Formats page.

Note: eSignal Wizard data is limited to US Stocks, Futures, Index and some Forex data.

North American Futures: Standard format is a two-character symbol, space, month code, and last digit of expiration year. (ES Z4 is the CME E-Mini contract for Dec 04) For more, please see Symbols Formats and our Symbols Guide.

Note: For Continuous contracts, replace the month and year code with #F (ES #F).

Forex: Standard format is three-character symbol, space, spot code, and dash, then FX. By default, each is the cross rate for the US Dollar.
Example: EUR A0-FX is the symbol for the Euro.

Indices: US Indices are included with all eSignal Wizard subscriptions and each symbol begins with a $ sign (ex. $INDU is the Dow Jones Industrial Average). Here is a Complete List of all eSignal Indices in Alphabetical Order.

Note: some index symbols are not included in the local eSignal Wizard database but are accessible while in online mode.

Options: The symbol format for Options in the GET program is Root symbol, space, the month code, and then strike price code. (IBM VT).

For a complete list of formats and Exchange codes, please visit our Symbols Formats page.
