Navigating Menus

eSignal Main Menu
The main menu allows navigation through out the program.

File Menu - standard Windows File features of [new, open, close, save, save as, save as Text, internet options, and print options]

The Preferences command allows you to set a variety of options that affect the operation of the program, including the default options symbol form (long form or short form), display arrows for Ticks, prompt before sorting data, 52-week high or low alerts, a pre-market display to monitor pre-market trading, show scrollbars for Main window, select whether the New Headline button will dim after a period of time, display quote prices using a full precision format, and reset Symbol count if maximum symbol count is exceeded.

Layout Menu – several options to work with layouts.

The Open Layout command opens a layout that you have saved or that was supplied with the application. A layout is the arrangement of windows within the main application window. Layouts include the placement and shapes of windows. For example, you can save a layout that includes a Quote window displayed full size across the top half of the screen and a Ticker window running at the bottom of the screen.
Shortcut: Alt-L, O

The Save Layout command saves the current window arrangement.
Shortcut: Alt-L, S

The Save Layout As command saves a window arrangement under a new name. The Save Layout As command is useful if you want to save more than one layout. If you change a layout, you can save the new arrangement under a different name to keep both the old layout and the new layout.
Shortcut: Alt-L, A

The Page command opens a single file on your computer as a Page. When working with a Page you still open and modify individual windows, but no longer need to save the individual windows before saving the Page. Any changes to the individual windows will be saved as part of the Page file when you save the Page.

Edit Menu – standard Windows Edit features of [cut, copy, paste, select all, clear]

In Quote, Portfolio, and Summary windows, the Insert Row command inserts a new row. The row is inserted directly above the row where your cursor is positioned. If you do not position your cursor first, the new row appears after the existing rows.
Shortcut: Alt-E, Ctrl-I or I

The Insert Headings command adds a new standard heading row above the row in which your cursor is currently placed.
Shortcut: Alt-E, H or Ctrl-H

The Go To command moves the cursor quickly to a particular symbol or comment in a Quote, Portfolio, or Summary window. After finding the first occurrence of the symbol or comment, press the F5 key to find subsequent occurrences.
Shortcut: Alt-E, G or F7

View Menu - several commands that easy access to trade and news information:

The Headlines command opens the Text Manager and displays a list of news headlines for today.
Shortcut: Alt-V, H

The Hot News command opens the Text Manager and displays a list of symbols that have been the subject of a news alert today. This command is available only to broadcast users.
Shortcut: Alt-V, N or F8

The Leaders command enables you to see an Intraday summary of today's trading. The window is organized into sections that list U.S. stock and stock option gainers and losers as well as volume leaders for several markets. Leader data is updated every 15 minutes.
Shortcut: Alt-V, L or Ctrl-L

The Alerts command allows you to set high and low limit alerts for a selected symbol. You can set alerts for all fields in the Quote window. You also have the option of setting a specific alert for all stocks, options, or futures in a layout. You set limit values and alert notification options in the Alert Edit/Status dialog box.
Shortcut: Alt-V, A or Ctrl-A

The Toolbar command displays or removes the toolbar from the top of the application window. The toolbar is a collection of icons you can use as a shortcut to some menu commands.
Shortcut: Alt-V, T

The Status Bar command displays or removes the status bar from the bottom of the screen.
Shortcut: Alt-V, S

The eSignal Central Toolbar command displays or removes the Central toolbar from the top of the application window. The toolbar is a collection of icons you can use as a shortcut to some menu commands controlling movement and sharing of files to eSignal FileShare.

The Page Toolbar commands displays or removes the Page toolbar from the top of the application window. The Page toolbar is a collection of icons you can use as a shortcut to creating and manipulating pages within eSignal.

The Advanced Chart Toolbar command displays or removes the Advanced Chart toolbar collection of icons. You can use the Advanced Chart toolbar to pull up various chart types, scale chart data, modify bar width and spacing, set cursor options, reset the chart, take a snapshot of the chart and to specify Advanced Chart window properties.

The Line Toolbar command displays or removes the Line toolbar collection of icons. You can use the eSignal Line Toolbar buttons to draw lines, boxes, squares, text and a variety of other studies on an Advanced Bar Chart. Like other eSignal Toolbars, the Line Toolbar is dockable and appears by default. You can toggle the Line Toolbar on and off by selecting Line Toolbar in the View menu. When you open a new Bar chart, the Line Toolbar appears above the Advanced Chart window. Although this is the default location, you can move the Line Toolbar just as you can any of the other dockable eSignal toolbars.

The Advanced Line Toolbar command displays or removes the Advanced Chart Line toolbar collection of icons. The Advanced Line Toolbar enables you to draw more advanced studies.

The Global Cursor Window displays data for the active Advanced Chart window. The Global Cursor window is blank until you run your cursor over an Advanced Chart window.

The Tools Menu – enables you to easy access to the advanced trading and formula creation tools available within eSignal:

The EFS menu allows you to access the Formula Editor, Wizard and encryption tools used by traders developing trading strategies.

The Alert List is the window that displays Alerts triggered by EFS formulas.

The Performance Monitor is an EFS utility used to aid developers in measuring the execution efficiency of EFS formulas.

The Formula Output Window displays error information generated by EFS formulas and is also used by developers for debugging EFS code with the use of the debugPrint() and deBugPrintln() EFS functions.

The Settings command opens a dialog box used for adjusting EFS Formula Engine Settings.

The Auto Updates command is the EFS tool for notifying users of updated versions of specified EFS formulas.

Options Menu(s) – the items available under this menu vary according to the selected window type (Quote window, Portfolio window, News window, and Ticker window). Primarily allows the numerous customizations of the window display (s), such as fonts, colors and defaults.

The Insert AutoList/Options Chain allows you to insert all the actively traded options, futures, futures options, or regional quotes for a symbol into a Quote window.

The Change Expiration command allows you to automate the process of tracking and updating expiration dates for options, futures, and futures options in the Quote and Summary windows. You can specify which dates you want to change and what you want to change them to.
Shortcut: Alt-O, E

The Dynamic Quote File command automatically updates the Quote window if a specific Quote window file changes. By default, this feature is enabled. You can disable the Dynamic Quote File feature by clicking the check box that appears next to Enabled. You use the browse button to find and specify the Quote file that you want to use to dynamically update the Quote window.

Research Menu - brings up links to many leading web sites containing the latest news and research information.

Market Scanners links you to information about eSignal’s market scanner services.

Scanner Menu – provides direct access to eSignal’s market scanners. The market scanners run real-time market scans on PreMarket trading activity, sector/group activity, rallies and sell-off and overall market leaders and laggers.

Basic Scan lets you view real-time activity by volume, price range and percent gainers and losers.

PreMarket Scan automatically scans the NASDAQ market before the opening bell to help you spot hot trading opportunities.

Power Scan scans the market in real time to see which stocks are hot and which are in trouble from the opening bell.

Hot Groups opens the Hot Groups Scan web site where you can look for industry sectors that are leading or under performing the market.

Rally Scan identifies breakout opportunities in real time and identify stocks as potential day trading candidates.

Product Information is the only Scanner menu choice available to you, if you do not currently subscribe to eSignal’s Market Scanner services. Select this menu item to go to a special site that describes eSignal’s powerful market scanner services.

Note: The Market Scanners are add-on subscription services.

Customer Support Menu – provides technical and administrative support in two ways:

  • Online help and information pages
  • Real – time chat services (LiveRep)

Report a Bad Tick opens a browser window where users can report tick data that is incorrect.

Advanced Charting Resource Center opens the browser window directly linked to eSignal Central website and an extensive online resource center for effectively using the Advanced Charts within eSignal.

System Status opens your browser and displays a web site that provides details on any network, exchange, or other data outages that may impact your service.

Service Bulletins launches you browser and brings you to a listing of any eSignal service bulletins and announcements that may affect your service. You can also link to the following resources from this site: Symbol Guide, Software Upgrades, Events Calendar, Exchange Newsletter, Referral Program information, and, an Exchange Holidays Calendar.

Service & Support FAQ’s launches your browser and brings you to a listing of numerous Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) regarding the eSignal service and support features.

Customer Connection access customer and technical support resources including: checking your account status, adding or deleting services, changing or checking your password, and linking to key technical support tools.

Account Maintenance takes you directly to the browser page to make account changes or updates including adding or updating credit card information.

LiveRep goes directly to eSignal’s Live Rep customer support.

Trade Menu – provides easy access to customized trading within eSignal:

The Trading Center command launches your web browser and connects to the web page specified in the Trading Center URL field in the Preferences dialog box. By default, this command opens a web page with an explanation of how to enter a URL linked to this command.
Shortcut: Alt-V, C

Window Menu – provides standard Microsoft windows features:

Cascade displays all open windows layered on top of each other in an overlapping arrangement.
Shortcut: Alt-W, C

Tile displays all the open windows side by side, without overlapping.
Shortcut: Alt-W, T

Arrange Icons
displays the icons of minimized windows in a grid arrangement.
Shortcut: Alt-W, I

Close All
closes all open windows. You are prompted to save any unsaved windows. Shortcut: Alt-W, A

List of current open windows displays a numbered list of open windows at the bottom of the Window menu. A check mark appears in front of the name of the active window. Choose a window from this list to make it active.
Shortcut: (Alt, W, 1; Alt W, 2; etc.)

Help Menu – provides standard Microsoft Help features:

About displays the version number and other identifying information.
Shortcut: Alt-H, A

Help Topics opens the Contents window, which you can use to find the information you need. Double-click the closed book icons in the Contents window to see which Help topics are available. Double-click the question-mark icons to see specific information.
Shortcut: Alt-H, H

Using Help displays information about using the Help system.
Shortcut: Alt-H, U

Symbol Formats opens a Help topic where you can find information about the formats of symbols for various kinds of issues.
Shortcut: Alt-H, S

NASDAQ 5th Character Guide opens the eSignal Browser page to a table explaining the NASDAQ 5th letter identifiers and a description of what each represents.

eSignal Right Click Menus
eSignal’s comprehensive right click menus allow instant access to News, Research, Options, Level II and Alerts and more. The actions you can take depend on the window and data type. For example, when you right-click on a NASDAQ stock symbol in a Quote window, you can choose to open a Level II window, a Detail window with normal or fundamental information, or view a historical daily chart or table for the symbol.

Quote Window – Right-click features

Quote window – when you right-click in a Quote window data row, you see some or all of the following commands, depending on the type of issue displayed in a row:

News opens the text manager to display headlines for the symbol.

NASDAQ Level II/Quote Montage opens a NASDAQ Level II window for a NASDAQ symbol, or opens a Quote montage window if a NYSE / AMEX symbol.

Options Chain opens a new Options Window and list currently trading options for the stock or futures symbol selected.

Daily History opens a daily history chart or table for the symbol. The data is downloaded from the eSignal historical data server. There are three choices:

  • Chart displays a daily historical chart for the issue
  • Table displays a daily historical table for the issue
  • Point & Figure displays a Point & Figure chart to help with market timing for the issue

The chart or table uses the default settings for that chart type.

Note: Broadcast users must have an active connection to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to download the data. Online users download the data automatically.

Intraday History opens an Intraday chart or table for the symbol. There are six chart types:

  • Interval Chart – displays in graphical form the range of prices of an issue over a time interval you choose.
  • Tick Chart – displays the tick data and volume of a symbol over time.
  • Interval Tabular – displays in tabular form the range of prices of an issue over a time interval you choose.
  • Price & Volume – displays the cumulative volume of shares traded at various prices.
  • Time & Volume – displays the cumulative volume of shares traded at the time interval you specify. (The chart or table uses the default settings for that chart type)
  • Market Profile – displays a three-dimensional graphic of developing supply and demand. It plots time on one axis and price on the other to give a visual impression of market activity. The view takes the form of a distribution curve or histogram.

Detail window opens a detail window for the symbol.

Fundamental window opens a detail window displaying fundamental data for the issue.

Island Book shows Pre-day and After-hours activity for NASDAQ stocks with the Island ECN.

Research displays research information about the selected symbol in a Quote, Portfolio, Detail, Summary, or Leaders window. There are seven choices:

  • Baseline
  • Market Guide
  • Dow Jones Profile Report
  • Dow Jones Publication Library
  • Group Power
  • Equity Trader
  • Free EDGAR

Set Alert opens the Alert Edit/Status dialog box, where you can define a limit alert for the symbol.

Edit performs text-editing operations on the symbol field, insert rows and headings, and go to a symbol that is specified. The choices are:

  • Cut – removes the selected text and stores it in the Clipboard
  • Copy – copies the selected text to the Clipboard
  • Paste – pastes the text in the clipboard into the symbol field
  • Clear – clears the symbol field
  • Insert Rows – inserts a new row below the current one
  • Insert Heading – opens the Heading options dialog box where you can choose the type of heading you want to add
  • Go To – opens the Go To dialog box, where you can enter the symbol you want to find

TRADE chooses a trading action for the selected symbol, if you have a trading relationship with a broker.
For issues other than options, you can choose from four commands

  • Buy
  • Sell
  • Sell short
  • Buy to Close

For Options, you can choose:

  • Buy open
  • Sell open
  • Sell close
  • Buy Close

Quote window heading row – when you right-click in a Quote window heading row, you see some or all of the following commands, depending on the type of issue displayed in a row:

Replace Heading opens the dialog box to choose a different heading.

Add Fields opens the dialog box to choose a field to add to the right of the one selected.

Replace Field opens the dialog box to choose a field to replace the one selected.

Delete Fields deletes the selected column heading.

Justify enables the justification of data in the field.

Data allows the choice between short and long display of data. The field label display at the top of the right-click menu includes short or long depending on the data display choice.

  • Long = full-length data or full decimal price
  • Short = abbreviated data or old trader’s decimal, i.e. 5’1/5 1/8, 5’2 / 5 1/4

Compute Change is available on all change column headings. It is a way to lessen the number of headings in a list that is too long. The choice is “From Previous Close” or “From Open” and determines what the last price is compared to for the value of the change.

– when you right-click in a Chart window data area, you see the following commands in a pop-up menu:

Draw Trendline (not available for all chart types) enables the cursor to be replaced by a crosshair pointer and the drawing of a trendline.

Note: Trendlines cannot be saved

Colors opens the dialog box to change the color of the chart.

Fonts opens the dialog box that changes the fonts in the chart.

Option Window - Right-click features

– when you right-click in a Options window data area, you see the following commands in a pop-up menu:

Advanced Chart Window – when you right-click in an Advanced chart window, you see the following commands:

Send Image To: sends the image of the window to several different areas for review or sharing with other users or for publication (local file, File Share, Lesson, Clipboard, and FTP Server)

Properties: Specifies chart colors, fonts, margins and ticker filtering settings.

Style Templates: Used to load a particular style template, to save a chart as a style template, to set a particular chart as a style template, or to load the default chart style template.

Time Templates: Used to load a particular time template or to load one of the default chart time templates.

Tools: Used to select the Back Testing, Price Filtering, or Data Exporting.

Chart Type: Used to select the specific type of chart display for the Advanced Chart ( Bar, Candle, Line, Point & Figure, Point Break, Renko, or Kagi).

Cursor: Enables specific Advanced Chart Cursor window settings (Cursor window, Cursor Tracking, and Lock in Place).

Scaling: Enables different scaling options for the Advanced Chart window and data (Auto-scale, Scale Price data only, and Log Scale).

Line Tools: Used to select all tools that are available in the Line and Advanced Line Toolbars (Magnet, View – specific lines, Delete (for all symbols)- lines, Delete (for current symbol) – lines, Minimize all Text, Restore all Text, Pointer, Trend Lines, Regression Trend Channels, Fibonacci Retracement, Fibonnacci Extension, Fibonnacci Time, Fibonnacci Circle, Gann Angles, Gann Box, TJ’s Ellispse, Andrew’s Pitchfork, Profit Taking Index, Time and Price Squares, Make or Brake, Text, Zoom, and Eraser).

Note: Some tools may be unavailable if user hasn’t paid for subscription for Add-on service (Advanced Get Studies).

Snapshot:

Un-merge Studies: Select un-merge studies to un-merge any studies that have previously been merged on the active Advanced Chart window.

Tile Studies: Select Tile studies to tile any studies on the Active window

Stack Studies: Select Stack studies to add studies on top of each in an active window.

Edit Studies: Edits study settings, colors and other display options.

Integrated Trading: Access trading options for Integrated Brokers that user has established, or eSignal’s Paper Trade options.

Basic Studies: Access to over 20 basic technical studies. Price only studies such as Bollinger Bands appear above the line. You can apply multiple studies to Advanced Charts and even merge studies.

Advanced GET Studies: Access to Advanced Technical Studies from Advanced GET, eSignal’s leading technical analysis software. (Requires additional purchase of services from eSignal)

Add-On Studies: Access to other major technical analysis studies through the purchase of add-on services. (Jan Arps and Mesa Software)

Formulas: Select an eSignal Advanced Chart Formula to the active chart window.

Remove All Studies: Removes all studies that have previously been applied to the Active Chart window.

Remove - “specify study”: In addition to being able to remove all studies from the right-slick menu, you can also remove individual studies.
